Garhwal University Botanist Wins Young Scientist Award for Himalayan Forest Research
Dr Om Prakash Tiwari of HNB Garhwal University received the Young Scientist Award for his research on Himalayan forest ecology and carbon storage models.
Current Summary
Dr. Om Prakash Tiwari, Assistant Professor in the Department of Botany and Microbiology at Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University, Srinagar, was honoured with the Young Scientist Award at the 21st Uttarakhand State Science and Technology Congress, organised by the Uttarakhand State Council for Science and Technology (UCOST) on October 25-26. The award was presented during the closing ceremony by former Uttarakhand Director General of Police Anil Raturi and former Chief Secretary Radha Raturi, recognising Tiwari's research in forest ecology. In his presentation, Tiwari discussed changing conditions of understory vegetation in Himalayan forests and specialised models developed to assess their productivity and carbon storage capacity, noting that shrub species in Himalayan forests play a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance and that biomass estimation of these species is essential for studying carbon storage, climate change, nutrient cycling, soil conservation and biodiversity.
