According to a September 23 ETV Bharat report citing police, a 54-year-old man from Ukhimath tehsil in Rudraprayag district was defrauded of approximately Rs 1.5 crore after being lured by a 'KBC Chehra Pehchano Game' on Facebook promising Rs 8.5 lakh and a car. He first paid Rs 1,550 as a purported tax after being contacted via WhatsApp by a person identifying as Nitin. Scammers sent forged RBI documents and images of public figures to build trust, then repeatedly demanded further payments between March and September, which the victim made from multiple bank accounts including Bank of Baroda, SBI, Chamoli District Cooperative Bank and Uttarakhand Gramin Bank, at times borrowing money from acquaintances.
