AIIMS Rishikesh, HIMS Dehradun Train Health Workers to Expand Palliative Care in Hill Hospitals
An ICMR-sanctioned project led by AIIMS New Delhi has trained 52 healthcare workers from 25 peripheral hospitals across Uttarakhand to strengthen pain and palliative care in remote hill areas.
Current Summary
The Indian Council of Medical Research has sanctioned a project to improve palliative care services in peripheral hospitals across North India, led by Dr Sushma Bhatnagar and Dr Brajesh Kumar Ratre of AIIMS New Delhi, which serves as the chief centre. AIIMS Rishikesh and the Cancer Research Institute at HIMS, Dehradun, are acting as nodal centres supporting the development and expansion of palliative care services in Uttarakhand's remote, hard-to-reach hill regions. A four-day joint capacity-building training programme was conducted simultaneously at both nodal centres, covering 13 peripheral hospitals linked with AIIMS Rishikesh and 12 linked with HIMS Dehradun, with a total of 52 healthcare workers participating. Dr Sushma Bhatnagar conducted a teaching session for staff from 25 peripheral hospitals in Uttarakhand, with the training aimed at enhancing the knowledge, clinical competencies and practical skills of healthcare professionals caring for patients with pain-related conditions, so that symptom relief and supportive care can be delivered closer to patients' homes.
